The concept of CMPHR’s Activism & Outreach strand is based on the belief that one of the critical requirements of a good education system is to promote participation and action aimed at social change. As a start, an education system must offer a socially relevant content. But its implementation must be based on the realisation that the social issues being studied in the classroom are not just matters for abstract speculation. They must translate into action, and help children become proactive rather than reactive.
Children learn best by doing – by getting involved and directly dealing with issues and concerns. CMPHR’s A & O work attempts to provide effective spaces for complementing and reinforcing the academic strand of work, while involving children in the process of thinking about, and taking action on, social issues.
CMPHR believes that it is critical to train a new generation in active, responsible and participating citizenship. However, this can only be done and the efforts sustained if a tradition of social activism is developed amongst children. A tradition, in turn, can only be created if children are given structured opportunities over a long period of time to engage with social issues. Through the A & O Strand, CMPHR aims to provide these opportunities.
